When it comes to learner engagement, there’s more than one type.

Often people ask me, “How do you keep engagement with your learners?” Here’s a video response I created to that question.

The truth is that there isn’t one type of “engagement problem,” and their solutions aren’t one size fits all.

I largely separate engagement into the following categories:

Concept Engagement - Whether or not the learning meets a need or you’re aligning how you describe the need with how your learner would.

Onboarding Engagement - Whether or not the learner’s first experience (their onboarding) is clear, smooth, and meets or exceeds the learner’s expectations.

Structure Engagement - Whether the length and pacing of the learning experience work for the learner.

Depth Engagement - Somewhat similar to the last point but pertains to whether the level of depth offered is enough or too much for the learner. This also relates to appropriate scaffolding.

Tone Engagement - Whether or not the learner is responding to the voice of the learning experience across design, videos, activities, audio, etc.

Activity Engagement - Whether the activities offered to the learner are helpful, exciting, revealing, or deepening.

Each can be tested, measured, and improved upon. We’ll make sure to unpack that in future posts.

What other types of engagement are you struggling with? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
